It is important to know how to act online in order to become web savvy. The Internet is continuing to become a primary form of communication, therefore it is vital to know what is and is not acceptable behaviour when communicating online.
It is particularly important for parents to help ensure that their children not only learn proper "Netiquette" at an early age, but that they are also using the Internet safely, suitably and considerately.
Below is a list of the main "Netiquette" rules; more information can be found on the following websites:

Don’t … | | Why? |
Type in all capital letters | | Shouting or screaming online is rude |
Send files containing viruses. | | Scan for viruses regularly and keep your anti-virus software up-to-date. |
Email virus hoaxes. | | Check that it is real before telling everyone that you know. |
Post any kind of stolen software. | | People should be rewarded for their efforts. Stealing even a small shareware program or game is illegal and a criminal offence. |
Send any kind of pyramid scheme. | | These are ALWAYS illegal, no matter what they say and they don't work. |
Format emails with coloured text/background | | They are difficult to read without converting them. |
Post anything without acknowledging the source. | | It is considered good form to acknowledge where the item came from with a link or short sentence, even if you have authorization to use it. |
Demand help from anyone on the Net and then get upset because you don't get it. | | People are busy: they don't owe you anything. If you ask nicely you might get help. |
Never give out phone numbers or personal information. | | Always check out who you are sending the information to, as they may not be reputable party. |
Send an email to a big group of people and reveal their email addresses to all the recipients | | It is considerate to all those recipients to place their email address in the BCC field. |
Email very large files without informing the other person. | | Receiving a large file will slow things down for users, fill up their mailbox and prevent them from receiving something that may be more important. |
Email subject lines that go on and on and on. | | Use the body of the email for your message and the subject line for a brief description. |
Send emails with no subject line at all. | | This is a spammers tactic. A subject line gives someone a little information before they read the main text. It also helps people sort and organize their emails. |
